Conditional Based Service
Conditional Based Service (CBS) was introduced in 2002 when the new 7-series model was launched, and is now a standard feature on most new BMWs.
It was designed to offer a flexible maintenance schedule for your vehicle. Rather than using fixed times and distances to determine when servicing is required, CBS gathers information from sensors fitted around the vehicle and lets you know which components need attention. This prevents unnecessary replacement of components and maximises their use.
Components supported by CBS
The components supported varies between models depending on their specification and engine type. But they fall into two main groups:
Group 1: Sensor based items
These items are monitored by physical and virtual sensors. They use variables including driving style, mileage and temperature.
* Engine oil- monitored by the DME/DDE engine control module
* Micro filter/pollen filter
* Front brake pads – Monitored by the DSC stability control module
* Rear brake pads – Monitored by the DSC stability control module
* Diesel Particulate filter – Monitored by the DME/DDE engine control module
Group 2: Internally calculated items
These items do not require physical sensors, and instead operate under fixed intervals. Remaining service life is calculated by the IDrive and based on time and distance.
* Brake fluid
* Spark plugs
* User interface
* Instrument cluster
Viewing your service requirements on the IDrive
Your IDrive will notify you of service requirements, and BMW aim to provide around four weeks’ notice to ensure you have plenty of time to arrange your vehicle service.
The Service Menu in the your IDrive lets you check the current state and remaining serviceable life of all components supported by CBS, using a traffic light system to help you quickly see which items need attention:
Green means no service is required
Yellow means the component is nearing the end of its serviceable life
Red means the service deadline has been passed.
